According to Tharalson, developing ones self as an artist in any medium from music to visual arts and everything in between shouldn’t be thought of as a career, or even a calling. Better to approach and commit yourself completely to your art in the realm of the lifestyle wherein your art resides. There are no guarantees and certainly no security in making this sort of a decision.
“It takes courage to fully commit yourself to any kind of an artistic lifestyle.” -Tharalson
Tharalson is well-versed in artistic courage, having left his family home at the age of 18 to seek out and become part of the underground bohemian art scene that existed in California in the early 60’s. Eschewing traditional art schools and the pursuit of a “career” as a commercial or professional artist, Tharalson embarked on an extensive self taught education by developing relationships with what he considered to be artistic mentors. Throughout those early years he worked alongside and lived amongst outcast painters, sculptors, builders, iron workers, poets, musicians, and dancers that he found during his travels. It was from this exposure that Tharalson’s ability to seriously create in a wide array of mediums took root. Over the past several decades, this same commitment has matured and developed into the lifestyle and artwork that he carries on with to this day.
“How did I end up like this? I really have no idea, nor do I have any regrets” -Tharalson
